On November 20, 1925 Robert Francis Kennedy was born to Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald in Brookline, Massachusetts. Managing his brother's presidential campaign in 1960 and serving as his attorney general, he was the president's closest friend and political confidant. Having dedicated himself to his brother's career, Bobby was devasted by his assassination on Novemember 22, 1963. Forced from his brother's shadows, Robert F. Kennedy began to carve out his own path in politics. In 1965, Robert Kennedy was elected Senator of New York, a position he held for the next three years. As the presidential elections of 1968 approached, Americans expected their current President, Lyndon Johnson, to seek re-election. However, this election did not play out the way most had thought it would. Stunning the country on March 31, 1968, President Johnson announced that he would not be seeking re-election, a decision which threw the Democratic Party into an uproar. Kennedy was faced with a decision: Should he run for the presidency of the United States? Robert Kennedy eventually became convinced that he should run as casualities in Vietnam reached an all-time high and Johnson's decision left a void in the Democatic Party. As a frontrunner in the Democratic primaries, Robert F. Kennedy found his fiercest opponent in Eugene McCarthy, losing to him in the Oregon primary. After this loss, a win in the California primary was essential. On June 2, 1968, while celebrating his victory in the California Primary at Los Angeles's Ambassador Hotel, Robert F. Kennedy was assasinated by Sirhan Sirhan.
